Hello and welcome! My name is Heather Rochon. I am a current graduate student at Wayne State University, studying for my master’s degree in Library and Information Science. I am also a graduate of Oakland University, with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Creative Writing, Magna Cum Laude and Departmental Honors.
My education at Oakland has prepared me for the professional world by providing hands-on experience in different mediums of journalism and creative writing. I have gained many essential skills required in today’s job market– particularly in writing, editing, photography, online journalism and social media. In my classes, I have been able to explore many unique avenues of writing, such as hard news, feature news, personal non-fiction and creative fiction.
Presently, I am studying to become a librarian. While information professionals can have a variety of different jobs in the professional world, I hope to be a librarian at a public library. Writing and reading have always been strong and dedicated passions of mine. I want my future to hold a creative combination of both.
This site features links to my published and blogging works. I post about current events and write my own book reviews. I also have pages and links dedicated to my journalism projects and my resume.
What have I been up to?
In 2014, I began teaching creative writing to elementary age students at the Baldwin Center in Pontiac.
From September 2014 to May 2015, I wrote monthly columns for Lewmag. For a self-narrative class, I worked on a blog called A Narrator Speaks. Before graduating I was the president of the OU Creative Writing Club and also part of the editing team for Oakland University’s student journal, Swallow the Moon.
In 2015, I also was the media specialist for Source Point Press Publishing, a small Michigan-based publishing company. My main project for Source Point was to develop and maintain the Michigan Independent Comic Enthusiast’s (or M.I.C.E.) blog, as well as the associated Facebook and Twitter pages.
Right now, I work at the Shelby Township Public Library while completing my graduate studies.
You can find me on LinkedIn, Twitter, Flickr, and Goodreads.
